Quick thoughts: A good start to a new series. I’m looking forward to reading more.

When I read the first sentence of Red-Headed Step Child I was hooked.
“Digging graves is hell on a manicure

I was so keen to get this book that when I started collecting it I had a feeling it was going to be a series I would want to read. After a long time I picked it up and decided after reading more reviews to give it a go. The first few days of reading this book I could not devour it quickly enough. However like many of the books of late it was one of those dreaded times when despite it being a fantastic read I had picked it up and put it down between so many books I don’t think I absorbed enough of it. In saying that my first read around was an action packed, hilarious, quirky journey that I laughed, cursed and battled by way through to the end.

I am not a big fan of outright politics, but I did enjoy it a lot in Red Headed, I found it hard to pick sides at times and not because I am a psychopath, but because some of the characters. Ahem, Clovis is one of those characters that despite being a bastard was kind of tempting to me and Lavinia Kane is someone who I would gladly backhand if I had the chance to, making my fuel and team spirit for Sabina all the more powerful as she was plunged into the dark so many times and battled to find out who she was, what her place was and what her true options were in life; to fight or to die

One of the best parts about this book [aside from the demon who I fell in love with the minute magic hit  him]was the take on vampires. I am in one of those groups of people who read a lot of the same genre and after a while you just need a little something to add that spark to a novel.  Jaye wells pumps this book with that spark and what’s more she has even created a spark in me and my usual dislike of fey into something that I now want to read more of, and all because of cute bad-ass Vinca. Of course I cannot forget the other member of this novel that made my day and filled the book with just enough snippets of romance to keep me happy and just a dash of witty banter and skin contact to make me want to fight the ever feisty and flawed Sabina Kane for a spot on the kitchen table, Adam Lazarus who has made me a believer in his cause, and the cause of all Mages. [Hell yeah bring me some more sexy creatures] and Sabina, damn Sabina Kane with her snarky attitude and her flaws that make me want to stand by her side and fight alongside her. It’s rare to really find a character who one can connect to, especially the typical outcast cliché, but damn Jaye wells does a great job with Sabina and I grew to admire her despite my constant mixed emotions about her and the novel throughout my reading.

I liked Jaye’s writing style. It was Sassy, humorous, thrilling and at the end of the day a great novel. I would certainly recommend it to fans of the genre and those who like to see a mixture of creatures thrown together with a great concept and a few cute and romantic moments thrown into the mess and suspense of a fun fantasy read.  Overall I enjoyed it and I did have moments when the book was slow, and a bit confusing, but overall it was a great read and what I felt like at the time and I look forward to reading the next book in the future.

I am giving this:
